Junior Database Administrator

Job description

This is an entry-level administrator who works with databases (Usually Oracle. Sometimes MS SQL and AWS RDS’s) and related software and applications overseeing database operations, data fixes, access, permissions, account creation, and data merging. Some additional duties in this position include:

  • Checking SQL scripts to make sure code only includes inserts, updates, and deletes
  • Checking SQL scripts to make sure there are no changes to constraints or Data Definition Language (DDL): alter table, remove a column, add the column.

This position will also create accounts within the Oracle environment and assist with SQL code deployments. Excellent social skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills, are required since this position will routinely interact verbally and in writing with many members of the technology department. The candidate must be eager to learn the unique characteristics of our education-centric environment and how the database components are named and how they relate to each other.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Run data fixes

  • Utilize applications used to receive requests for data fixes (JIRA)
  • Check to make sure code only includes inserts, updates, and deletes.
  • Check for items that are against policy.
  • Utilize tools that interact with the Oracle database (SQL Developer, TOAD, etc.)

Run Banner Merges:

  • Utilize applications used to receive requests for Banner merges (JIRA)
  • Fill in certain variables which identify specific student accounts and the tables and values needed to maintain and purify student data.
  • Utilize “dbms output” to analyze error output when necessary.
  • Manually analyze OEM dashboard and be mindful of traffic and performance.

Create Oracle accounts

  • Utilize applications used to receive requests for account creation/modification (ServiceNow)
  • Utilize tools that interact with the Oracle database (SQL Developer, TOAD, etc.)
  • Create and modify Oracle accounts.
  • Modify grants for existing accounts
  • Utilize tools to store account credentials (Thycotic: store the secret under the proper
  • folder)
  • Manually analyze OEM dashboard and be mindful of concurrency events
  • Assist with Oracle code deployments
  • Research and troubleshoot database related software issues.
  • Perform routine administrative tasks.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings.
  • Provide support to systems programmers and department staff.
  • Communicate issues (verbally and in writing) to appropriate staff and customers.
  • Become familiar with the established policies and procedures which guide database administration
  • functions. 
  • Generate reports and documents in an accurate and timely manner when requested. 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Ability to work well with others, including team members, project managers, management/leadership, developers, quality assurance teams, non-technical staff, etc.
  • Driven to take ownership of the systems within his/her purview
  • Driven to learn and grow as a DBA
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks with completion of short-, mid-and long-term projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of database concepts and native Oracle tools
  • High proficiency with computers, OS’s, and productivity apps like JIRA, ServiceNow, Thycotic, etc
  • At least 1-year experience in Oracle Enterprise Manager
  • At least 1-year experience using SQL Developer, TOAD, or other tools used for administrating Oracle

Preferred Qualifications:

2 – 3 years of experience as an Oracle DBA in an enterprise-level environment
